South Carolina Wildlife Federation Honors Lancaster Conservationist D. Lindsay Pettus COLUMBIA - Lindsay Pettus was awarded Conservationist of the Year at South Carolina Wildlife Federation's 39th Annual Conservation Awards Banquet. Fourteen well-deserving individuals and organizations were recognized Saturday January 24, 2004 at the Francis Marion hotel in Charleston, South Carolina. Lindsay Pettus was a founding board member of the South Carolina Nature Conservancy in 1978, and went on to receive the Oakleaf Award, the organization's most prestigious voluntary award. He also founded the Katawba Valley Land Trust and continues to serve as president. As a former member of the Lancaster County Council, Lindsay has also encouraged the completion of the Katawba River Corridor Study, a comprehensive management plan for the river. As President, Lindsay has helped to protect over 1300 acres of land in Chester and Lancaster counties. Lindsay is an activist for conservation issues statewide. He was a member of the Land Legacy Steering Committee that contributed to the passage of the Conservation Land Bank Act in 2002. Lindsay has been a key advocate for South Carolina State Parks and was recently acknowledged as the State Parks Ambassador of the Year for his exceptional leadership for park protection. As a result of his many selfless efforts, Governor Jim Hodges made a point to declare January 14, 2003 "Lindsay Pettus Conservation Day." Other Conservation Award winners include:
